Frequently asked questions

How urgent is my situation, really?

Most HMRC letters have a hard deadline (often 30 days) and missing it has real consequences : penalties, escalation, or HMRC making determinations without you. But panic doesn't help. The right reflex is to share the letter with us within 24-48 hours, so we can assess what's actually at stake and respond properly before the deadline.

What if I've already missed the deadline?

You still have options. HMRC accepts late responses if there's a reasonable explanation, and the right tone in a late response can avoid penalties. Don't ignore subsequent letters. Talk to us, even after the deadline, the situation is usually salvageable.

Should I respond to HMRC myself first?

We strongly recommend not to. A first response sets the tone of the entire dossier, and the wrong wording can trigger escalation, increase the penalty, or open new lines of enquiry. Even a single sentence written hastily can be costly.

The cleanest path is to acknowledge the letter (a one-liner is fine) and let a VAT specialist draft the substantive reply.

Can you stop the penalty being applied?

In many cases, yes. Penalties from HMRC are largely behaviour-based. A well-structured response with the right tone, the right references and the right disclosures often results in penalties being reduced or removed entirely. The earlier we engage, the more options we have.

How is the client relationship handled?

You stay in full control. We work in the background on the technical response, and all communication can go through you or directly with your client, your call. We offer both white-label and co-branded engagement.
